What's on the menu: This week's podcast brief
A rundown of what you're getting to munch on this week.
This week’s Euroscopic podcast brief will be out soon. For those already hungry for it (or actually like to read), here’s what’s on the menu:
Amuse-bouche
Literally, food! Martin made donuts and — I can personally confirm — they were delicious.
Starter
Russia tells everyone to leave Niger alone, which of course means leave Niger to us. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says leave me in peace. She is chilling in Greece with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. It’s hard to blame her because Greece is wonderful, but she should take care not to get burned — and not from the sun or the wildfires.
Primo
Who else is on vacation? Everyone! If you are a member of the professional class of politicians, policy advisors, and journalists, you are probably not at your desk right now (this journalist says, writing from his desk …). That means stuff is happening; you just might not know it.
Secondo
So, if a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Fortunately, Martin and William are in the woods to say, yes. Yes, it does.
When it comes to migrant removal, the United Kingdom wants to treat the European Union like the European Union treats a lot of its neighbors. And the European Union is not very happy about that. Brussels to London: Sorry, no take backs!
It’s another summer of an awkward Mediterranean juxtaposition: Resort playground for the haves. Graveyard for the have-nots. Migrants keep drowning, dying, and disappearing just down the coast from where you are vacationing. For the truly macabre folks out there, here is a tracker of the stunning figures. And those are just the ones we can confirm.
Love migrants or hate migrants, William dissects how media and political players so often make the wrong pitch, which only further instrumentalizes human suffering.
Nachtisch
Will Germany ship Ukraine its cruise missiles and, more importantly, will Ukraine even be able to use them?
Doggy bag
Martin can’t get enough of political machinations around Europe, especially as it regards the ever-changing fate of the far-right. On the other side of binary, Open Society Foundations might be leaving Europe altogether.
Still hungry?
